Michigan High-Risk Insurance After an OWI: Limits and Costs

Last updated: October 20, 2026

SR22 insurance Michigan drivers need is different from most states because of the 2019 no-fault reform. You choose liability limits and personal injury protection, and both change your price. The SR22 filing itself is a small add-on.

One caution comes first. No official Michigan page we could read uses the term SR-22. The Secretary of State requires proof of financial responsibility certified by an insurer, and insurers and comparison sites call that an SR22. Confirm the exact form your case needs with the Secretary of State before you buy.

SR22 Insurance Michigan: What the State Requires

Michigan Compiled Law 257.518 says proof of financial responsibility is made by filing the certificate of an authorized insurer with the Secretary of State. It also bars registering a vehicle for a person required to file proof unless the policy designates that vehicle. The Secretary of State’s FAQ says the insurer’s home office supplies the certificates, and the process may take two to four weeks.

On duration, only commercial sources speak. MoneyGeek (updated April 29, 2026) says three years from the conviction date, and that your license is suspended again immediately if coverage lapses. Insurify (September 27, 2026) says three years without a gap. We found no official Michigan page stating the period, so ask the Secretary of State for your end date in writing.

Michigan calls the offense OWI, for operating while intoxicated. Insurers rate it like any impaired-driving conviction. Our guide to DUI vs DWI vs OVI explains how state terms differ.

Michigan Liability Limits After the 2019 Reform

Michigan Compiled Law 500.3009 sets the default bodily injury limits at $250,000 per person and $500,000 per accident, with $10,000 for property damage. You may choose $50,000 and $100,000 after signing a form that acknowledges the risks. Before July 2, 2020, the law required $20,000 and $40,000.

The state’s insurance department, DIFS, says you can’t select less than $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident. One older DIFS FAQ, updated March 12, 2020, still lists 20/40/10, but it predates the reform and is outdated. Use 50/100/10 as the floor and 250/500/10 as the default.

Michigan also has property protection insurance, which DIFS says pays up to $1 million for damage your car does to other people’s property in Michigan. That’s separate from the $10,000 property damage limit for other states. Ask your insurer how it shows both on your policy.

Personal Injury Protection Choices and the MCCA Fee

Your personal injury protection choice can move the price more than the SR22 fee does. DIFS lists six medical options: unlimited, up to $500,000, up to $250,000, up to $250,000 with exclusions, up to $50,000 for people on Medicaid, and an opt-out for people with Medicare Parts A and B.

The reform also required average premium reductions on policies issued after July 1, 2020: at least 45% for the $50,000 option, 35% for $250,000, 20% for $500,000, and 10% for unlimited. Those are statewide averages, not a discount on your own quote.

Every policy also carries a Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association assessment. An AAIS compliance alert (January 8, 2026) lists $84 per vehicle for unlimited medical coverage and $19 for other options, for July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. That comes from a secondary source, so verify it at the association’s own site.

What SR22 Insurance Michigan Drivers Pay

MoneyGeek (April 29, 2026) reports $191 a month for minimum SR22 coverage after an OWI, against $64 a month for a clean record. That’s about three times as much. It names Progressive as cheapest at $167 a month for minimum coverage. It also notes that Michigan prohibits credit-based pricing, so your record matters more than your credit.

Insurify (September 27, 2026) reports $151 a month for liability-only and $264 for full coverage with an SR22, against $130 and $228 for clean records. That’s about 16% more. The gap between the two sources comes from the violation. MoneyGeek prices an OWI, while Insurify prices a general SR22 profile.

The filing fee is small. MoneyGeek says $15 to $25 one time, and Insurify says about $25. See our SR22 down payment guide for what else your first payment includes.

How Michigan Compares With Other States

MoneyGeek publishes minimum-coverage SR22 prices after an impaired-driving conviction for several states, and its pages use the same minimum-coverage framing, though driver profiles may vary by page. Ohio shows $76 a month (August 18, 2026 page). Arizona shows $105 (September 4, 2026), Texas shows $152 (August 18, 2026), and Michigan shows $191.

StateMonthly priceMoneyGeek page date
Ohio$76August 18, 2026
Arizona$105September 4, 2026
Texas$152August 18, 2026
Michigan$191April 29, 2026

So Michigan is the most expensive of the four, and Ohio is the cheapest. The reform and the higher default limits are one plausible reason, but the sources don’t test that. What the data does show is that a Michigan driver should budget more than the state guides for Ohio or Arizona suggest. See our Ohio SR22 guide and Arizona SR22 guide for their figures.

Questions to Ask Your Agent About SR22 Insurance Michigan Policies

  • Which bodily injury limit is on this quote, and does it meet what the Secretary of State requires in my case?
  • Which PIP medical option is on this quote, and what does it cost against the next option?
  • How is the property protection coverage shown, and is the catastrophic claims assessment listed as a separate line?
  • Does the SR22 fee repeat each term, and what’s the down payment?
  • How quickly will the insurer send the certificate, given that the state’s own FAQ says the process may take two to four weeks?

Michigan Reinstatement Costs

Michigan Compiled Law 257.320e sets a $125 reinstatement fee for suspensions under several sections, including 625, which covers impaired driving. It sets $85 for suspensions under section 321c. MoneyGeek and Michigan Legal Help both cite $125.

One old cost is gone. Michigan Legal Help says the state ended the Driver Responsibility Fees on October 1, 2018. The same page lists restoration steps after a revoked license, including a 10-panel urinalysis lab report, evidence of sobriety, and three to six notarized support letters.

Check your own record before you file anything. The Secretary of State charges $16 for an online record, and the online copy is available for seven days. Records are retained for 10 years, with some offenses kept longer.

If Insurers Decline You: The Michigan Facility

If standard and non-standard insurers both decline you, the Michigan Automobile Insurance Placement Facility is the last resort. Its FAQ says you apply through any licensed Michigan agent appointed by an insurer writing auto coverage in the state.

Eligibility includes owning a Michigan-registered vehicle, holding a valid license, or being eligible for license restoration upon filing proof of financial responsibility. That last case is the SR22 driver. We couldn’t verify the facility’s limits or policy terms, so ask your agent. Our guide to assigned risk pool car insurance explains how these plans work.

Common Mistakes With SR22 Insurance Michigan Buyers Make

Three mistakes recur in this market. Buyers assume the $50,000 and $100,000 option is the default, when the default is $250,000 and $500,000. Buyers ignore the catastrophic claims line and then wonder why two quotes differ. And buyers wait until the last week to ask for the certificate, even though the state’s FAQ says the process can take two to four weeks.

The remedy is simple. Choose limits deliberately and compare quotes at the same setting, ask for every fee line, and start the certificate request the day you know you need it.

How to Buy SR22 Insurance Michigan Drivers Can Afford

  • Ask the Secretary of State which proof your case requires and for how long, and get the answer in writing.
  • Choose your bodily injury limit and PIP option first, then compare quotes at identical settings.
  • Get quotes from a standard carrier and a specialist. Our cheapest SR22 insurance companies comparison shows who appears in 2026 rankings.
  • Ask whether the filing fee repeats each term, and how much is due up front.
  • If you own no car, ask about a non-owner SR22 policy.

Three choices you control set the price of SR22 insurance Michigan drivers buy: limits, PIP, and insurer. The filing is the smallest of them. Compare state costs on our average cost of SR22 insurance by state page before you accept a quote.

Figures were checked on September 29, 2026 against the sources named above. Several Michigan pages carry no date, so confirm the details with the Secretary of State.
