The average cost of SR22 insurance by state runs from $2,628 a year in Illinois to $7,810 in California. That comes from the only dataset we found that prices all eight of our target states the same way.
An SR22 (also written SR-22) is a certificate, not a policy. What raises your price is the violation behind it. This page puts the numbers side by side, shows where sources conflict, and links to our state guides.
Average Cost of SR22 Insurance by State: One Dataset, Eight States
First, Insurance.com (May 6, 2026) publishes annual premiums for a 40-year-old driver in a Honda Accord LX with good credit. It compares a standard policy with a single DUI that requires an SR22. Insure.com (May 11, 2026) prints near-identical figures, so treat the two as one dataset, not two confirmations. But neither page says which coverage level the state figure uses. So use the numbers to compare states, not to predict your quote.
| State | Standard policy (a year) | With a DUI and SR22 (a year) | DUI increase | SR22 form alone adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Texas | $2,043 | $3,586 | 75% | 10% |
| California | $2,416 | $7,810 (Insurance.com prints $7,808) | 223% | 2% |
| Florida | $2,694 | $5,005 (DUI and the required filing) | 86% | 19% |
| Ohio | $1,417 | $2,971 | 110% | 20% |
| New York | $1,870 | $2,894 (a DWI figure, since New York does not use SR22) | 55% | 17% |
| Virginia | $1,469 | $3,110 (DUI and filing) | 112% | 18% |
| Georgia | $1,970 | $3,906 | 98% | 18% |
| Illinois | $1,532 | $2,628 | 72% | 18% |

Two patterns stand out. California’s DUI penalty is the largest in dollars and in percentage, while New York, Illinois, and Texas show the smallest increases, at 55%, 72%, and 75%.
New York needs a caution. Because the state doesn’t use the SR22 system, the SR22 column in that table works as a proxy for a DWI conviction. Read our New York guide before you compare it with any other state.
Why the Average Cost of SR22 Insurance by State Changes With the Source
Single-number claims fall apart once you compare methods. For California, Insure.com shows $7,810 a year. Forbes Advisor (September 23, 2025) shows $5,593. ValuePenguin (June 30, 2026) shows $1,592 for a 30-year-old man on minimum coverage, without stating the period on the page.
Also, Texas shows the same spread. ValuePenguin (June 30, 2026) lists $88 a month for minimum coverage after a DUI. But MoneyGeek (August 18, 2026) lists $152 a month for a 40-year-old in a different car. Insurance.com’s Texas page (April 16, 2026) lists $5,137 a year for a first DUI, against $3,586 in the multi-state table.
Driver age, car, coverage level, and quote pool move the price more than the state line does. So compare any average against your own quotes, and never budget from one source.
What the SR22 Form Adds and What the Violation Adds
The same dataset also prices an SR22 without a DUI. Those figures show that the form itself moves the price very little. Texas rises 10%, California 2%, Florida 19%, Ohio 20%, New York 17%, Virginia 18%, Georgia 18%, and Illinois 18%. So the SR22 explains 2% to 20% of the increase, and the violation explains the rest.
That’s the most useful number on this page. When you shop, the insurer’s surcharge for your conviction is the price driver, so compare how each company rates the violation. However, the filing itself costs a small one-time fee at most insurers. It’s the smallest part of the average cost of SR22 insurance by state.
SR22 Filing Fees: What Sources Report
No state sets the filing fee, but insurers do, and the reported band is narrow. Forbes Advisor (September 23, 2025) says it typically costs $25. The Zebra (December 1, 2025) says $15 to $35. Insure.com (May 11, 2026) says a one-time fee of about $15 to $50. ValuePenguin (September 25, 2026) says $25 to $50.
One detail matters more than the amount. Progressive (April 9, 2026) says its fee is about $25 and applies to each policy term while the SR22 is required. Also, Insurance.com (May 6, 2026) says the fee averages $25 per renewal. So ask every insurer whether the fee repeats.
National Averages for SR22 Drivers
Forbes Advisor (September 23, 2025) puts the national average with a DUI and SR22 at $3,295 a year, or $275 a month. It says that’s about $1,400 a year more than a clean-record driver without an SR22. Its cheapest state is Idaho at $2,174, and its most expensive is California at $5,593.
Then Insurify (September 27, 2026) reports SR22 drivers pay $140 a month for liability-only and $268 for full coverage. Clean-record drivers pay $98 and $187, so SR22 drivers pay about 43% more. Meanwhile, ValuePenguin (September 25, 2026) lists $391 a month for full coverage after a DUI, about $4,692 a year.
Insurance.com (May 6, 2026) says drivers with an SR22 pay $1,511 more a year on average. Because each source uses its own quote pool, these national figures disagree. Use them as a range, not a promise.
Convert everything to one period before you compare. Insurify’s $268 a month equals $3,216 a year, which sits close to the $3,295 annual figure from Forbes Advisor. ValuePenguin’s $391 a month equals $4,692 a year. Then check both against the average cost of SR22 insurance by state table above.
SR22 Rules by State: Limits, Duration and Form
Because the price depends partly on what each state demands, here is what official pages say, with links to our full guides.
| State | Minimum limits | Period | Our guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Texas | 30/60/25 | Two years from conviction, per Texas DPS (a 2020 page) | Texas SR22 guide |
| California | 30/60/15, per the DMV (modified July 10, 2025) | The DMV handbook refers to a three-year period | California SR22 guide |
| Florida | FR-44 replaces SR22 for DUI, with 100/300/50 limits under Florida Statute 324.023 | At least three years | Florida FR-44 guide |
| Ohio | 25/50/25 | One year for suspensions imposed on or after April 9, 2025 | Ohio SR22 guide |
| New York | 25/50/10 | The sources we found say New York does not use SR22 | Does New York require SR22 |
| Virginia | 50/100/25 from January 1, 2025 (FR-44 for DUI at double those limits) | Three years, per the DMV form | Virginia FR-44 guide |
| Georgia | 25/50/25 | Three years for no-insurance convictions, per Georgia DDS | Georgia SR22 guide |
| Illinois | 25/50/20 | Three years per secondary sources, because the Secretary of State pages could not be read | Illinois SR22 guide |
Two more state guides sit outside the eight-state dataset. Our Michigan SR22 guide and Arizona SR22 guide cover their own figures. MoneyGeek (April 29, 2026) lists $191 a month for Michigan SR22 minimum coverage after an OWI, against $64 for a clean record. It lists $105 a month for Arizona (September 4, 2026).
How to Use the Average Cost of SR22 Insurance by State
- Use the state average as a sanity check. If your first quote is more than double the average cost of SR22 insurance by state for a driver like you, keep shopping.
- Compare the same limits at every insurer. A minimum-coverage quote against a full-coverage quote tells you nothing.
- Ask each insurer how it rates your specific conviction, since the surcharge is the price driver.
- Ask whether the filing fee repeats each term, and how much is due up front. Our SR22 down payment guide covers this.
- Read our cheapest SR22 insurance companies comparison to see which carriers show up in 2026 rankings.
The pattern in the data is clear. The form is cheap, the violation is expensive, and the insurer you choose decides how expensive. Spend your time on the insurer spread. It’s worth far more than the average cost of SR22 insurance by state in any table.
Figures were checked on September 29, 2026 against the sources named above. Where a source didn’t state its method, we say so.
